Sydenham Scrap Metals is an established company of scrap metal merchants, and has operations across all South East London areas including Forest Hill. We welcome consignments from homeowners, tradespersons, small businesses, companies and major organisations. The core of our business is metal recycling and we provide collections throughout the region that allow you to cash in on the monetary value of materials.
If you have accumulated scrap from a project in Forest Hill but have never used scrap metal merchants before, it’s understandable that you might have a few questions to ask. We answer some of the more likely ones here, and provide a clearer insight into our world.
WHY SHOULD I RECYCLE SCRAP METAL?
The planet has a finite amount of resources and we can only continue to take from it for so long. Even with unlimited ore to work with, the energy required to produce primary metal causes untold damage to the environment. It requires much less energy for scrap metal merchants and recyclers to reuse it than it does to mine, purify and shape from scratch.
Customers and clients in the Forest Hill area with their own environmental concerns should always look to recycle metals, such as copper, steel and aluminium, as often as possible.
WHAT HAPPENS TO RECYCLED SCRAP METAL?
Many of the products you already use at home or at work have recycled scrap metal in them. Some metals, including brass and iron, have the potential for reuse many times over. The construction industry uses recycled metal for the building of roads and bridges. Boats, cars and aircraft also undergo manufacture with scrap metal, as do furniture and fixings.
Mostly, scrap metal merchants process materials to create newer and stronger metals.
HOW MUCH IS MY SCRAP METAL WORTH?
This is very much dependant on when you want to sell, and what it is that you have in your consignment. We make collections from Forest Hill on a daily basis but the price we pay varies from one day to the next. Many different factors affect the price that scrap metal merchants pay for your material, such as market rates, location, time of year and demand.
Demand is perhaps the most significant factor because, as with all commodities, rates fluctuate based on what the industry requires and what we can supply to them.
DO YOU ACCEPT ALL TYPES OF SCRAP METAL?
Yes. Some scrap metal merchants only deal with ferrous metals but we welcome non-ferrous materials too. The easiest way to identify between the two is to use a magnet. Ferrous metals are magnetic. Non-ferrous metals aren’t. For an easier transaction, we recommend that you sort ferrous and non-ferrous scrap into separate consignments.
If required, we can supply roll-on/roll-off containers which we leave at your site in Forest Hill and collect when full. We always leave empty containers for you after a collection.
HOW DO YOU PAY FOR SCRAP METAL?
Changes to the Scrap Metal Dealers Act in 2013 make it illegal for scrap metal merchants to pay for consignments in cash. The purpose of this is to deter instances of metal theft. Even so, customers and clients from the Forest Hill area can receive a same-day payment by BACS direct to their bank accounts. Payments on a non-working day may take longer to process.
We also make payment by cheque and by pre-paid Tuxedo money card. Sydenham Scrap Metals requires one form of photographic identification to validate payments.
WILL I GET A FAIR PRICE FOR MY SCRAP METAL?
Yes. Our yard has a calibrated digital weighbridge and measures scrap metal by weight accurately. It isn’t in the interests of our company to be anything other than clear and transparent over the way it handles your materials. Scrap metal merchants have a duty to be professional, and to protect the reputation of the metal recycling industry as a whole.
We promise to treat all visitors from Forest Hill fairly, and to always pay the current market rate for a particular type of scrap metal based on the displayed weight of the consignment.
